I just listened to this show and I enjoyed it.
In august 2013 I had planned a bike ride (on bicycle) with tent from Los Angeles up north to San Francisco. After many long bike rides everywhere in Europe, Canada and the USA this one was the first one where I stepped off my bike. One important reason was the very bad weather. It was cold and rainy and I had a strong headwind when I left LA and I only got as far as the airport of Santa Barbara where I rented a car and took my bike with me in the car. Another reason when back in 2013 I started to increase my geocaching activity and I also found out that it was difficult to combine my planned bike ride with geocaching. There was an afternoon where I had the pressure to arrive on time on the next location and I could not go out geocaching and explore some nice places. The strong head wind from the north on a boring highway made me decide to go to the next car rental at the airport of Santa Barbara which became my final bike ride stop after leaving Los Angeles.
After that I had mixed feelings of both depression and relief. I felt sad that I had given up my bike ride) but I also felt freedom that now I could out everywhere geocaching easily. I had not even started on Highway 1 yet and the beautiful scenery you talk about had yet to come. And when I was there, it was really beautiful. And I discovered also the emptiness on the Californian coast and when I saw that I felt more happy that I was in a car. I have biked on empty landscapes before in Idaho and British Columbia but that was with a group. Here I was on my own. I went to Hearst Castle, I saw the sea lions there and I did the cache “Gem on Big Sur” like you and I enjoyed it a lot.
The summer weather was still bad. When I was in Monterey it was so cold and grey everywhere. On my picture with some caches you see the rainy grey sky. And in the evening I was angry with myself that I had no more clothes with me. But Monterey was a nice place and I never forget the ‘hoink hoink hoink hoink hoink hoink’ that I heard constantly there. I had to laugh when I heard it in the background of your fantastic recordings. In the harbor I did a very nice multi cache and I enjoyed the town.
Except from that I was not happy with the tourist service in California and the lack of quality and hospitality on these expensive camp grounds, but I will leave that here. California is an exception in the USA in the hospitality and friendliness I feel everywhere as a bicycle tourist from the Netherlands.
When I arrived in San Francisco the weather finally cleared up. That is where I could enjoy my holiday because it was bright and sunny and from the hills around the city where I did some geocaches I saw beautiful scenery. I stayed a couple of days in a motel in San Mateo and I also did some geocaches over there.
So listening to your road story I had to smile because I recognized so much and I see that we have done some geocaches in common near Monterey but on different times.
Anyway, keep up the good work!
