We've discussed the topic of “Lazy Loggers” on many PodCacher shows over the years. Many geocache hiders can relate to the frustration of seeing nothing but “TFTC” or “Found it” or even just a single emoji in logs on your caches.
Here are a few tips and tricks that might work to help encourage longer and more creative cache logs.
- Provide a Pathtag (or similar small prize) to cachers who write quality logs
- Suggest that finders write their log using a “theme” (private detective story, haiku poem, nursery rhymes, celebrity sightings, jokes, etc.)
- This cache (Dirk Manlee and the Wanton Widow) revolves around a kind of 1940's private detective story. Cachers were invited to log their finds "using appropriately hard-boiled language.”
- The cache Hickory Dickory Doc, encouraged loggers to include something in their post about nursery rhymes.
- Announce “log of the month” prizes or similar awards in your local geocaching community or at an event
- Suggest a game where each log adds one more sentence to a story
- Practice what you preach (make sure YOU are writing quality logs!)
- Above all, create a fun, quality, interesting, challenging, exciting geocache - and the logs you receive will reflect the effort you put in
- And remember, you can make logging suggestions, but you cannot make them a requirement of finding the cache
What about you? Do you have any tips or suggestions that you’d like to share? We'd love to hear about it!
My logs generally reflect the quality of a cache. The higher the quality of the cache, the more elaborate and creative I try to make my log. I see caches as being a gift from the cache owner to the Community, and logs being a gift back to the cache owner. Not all of these gifts are equal, but the effort with the log should reflect the effort put into the cache.
We hid this one back in 2011, and is still active today. We are encouraging finders to leave their log in the poetic phrasing of AABBA (a limerick).
While it is just a simple park-and-grab, it offers a break from an interstate drive, while also being near a historic cemetery.
Those that choose to follow instructions have left some VERY creative prose!

When we started we left a lot of lame logs. Over time we improved our logs. After we placed our first hides we really came to realize how much fun a good log was to read. We decided to up our game. Our logs on GC7RVJ2 and GCB20Q9 are good examples of the logs we try to leave now. If you find them interesting you can follow our adventures on Facebook at Geocaching with Dealfarms.
