On May 2, 2000, the system called "selective availability" which prevented accurate use of the Global Positioning System (GPS) by civilians, was turned off.
The very next day, May 3, 2000, Dave Ulmer (a computer consultant and GPS enthusiast) decided to test the accuracy. He hid what he called a "Stash" near Portland Oregon, posted the coordinates in an Internet GPS users group and waited to see if anyone would find it!
Within 3 days it was found. Even though the official name wasn't adopted until later, Geocaching was born!
