Garmin Foretrex 101

From Team Wibble
Positive:
1) It's a wrist mounted GPSr. This has to be the best feature. I always have both hands free and I don't have to worry about dropping the GPSr or accidentally leaving it lying on a rock, I can wear it when I'm geocaching by bike or scrambling up steep rocky hills.
2) Its compact - about half the size of most hand held GPSrs, doesn't take up much space when its stowed away in a bag, and not too bulky when sitting on my wrist
3) Excellent battery life for such a small unit - it takes two AAA batteries, and even rechargeable AAA's last around 10 hours. Replacement batteries, being AAAs, are small and easy to carry around without taking up too much space.

Negative:
1) No mapping capabilities. Its your basic follow the arrow GPSr.
2) Only holds 500 waypoints - when you live in Adelaide, Australia, this just isn't enough. With over 1000 finds under my belt, my pocket query of 500 still maxes out at less than a 100 kilometre radius from my house.
3) Being a small unit, the display screen is very small. However, it is a very clear, basic display. I find it easier to read than the Garmin Etrex, for example.

Other good features generally is that it's a basic, easy to use GPSr, and I find the buttons easier to use than the side mounted buttons on hand held units. It doesn't have as good reception as the newer SiRF III chipset GPSrs but seems to consistently outperform other handheld GPSrs of its vintage. Its been knocked about and scratched and still works okay - it's a pretty robust unit. The bright orange backlight is fantastic for caching at night as well.
